BJJ & Wrestling Physical Therapy in Orange County

Physical Therapy for BJJ Athletes & Wrestlers

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) and wrestling place unique demands on the body. Takedowns, grappling, submissions, scrambling, repetitive gripping, and sustained positions can place significant stress on the muscles, joints, and connective tissues. Physical therapy can help BJJ athletes and wrestlers recover from injuries, improve movement, and safely return to training and competition.

Common BJJ & Wrestling Injuries We Treat

Injuries may occur suddenly during training or competition or develop gradually from repetitive stress. Common conditions include:

Physical Therapy for Grappling Injuries

Treatment begins with a thorough evaluation of the injury, strength, mobility, and movement patterns that may be contributing to the problem. Because BJJ and wrestling require significantly more from the body than normal daily activities, rehabilitation should prepare the athlete for the specific demands of grappling.

Treatment may include manual therapy, mobility exercises, progressive strengthening, balance and stability training, neuromuscular re-education, and sport-specific exercises. As recovery progresses, rehabilitation can incorporate movements such as squatting, posting, bridging, sprawling, hip escapes, technical stand-ups, shots, rotational movements, gripping, and controlled takedown positions.

Return to BJJ & Wrestling

Our goal is not simply to decrease pain, but to help athletes regain the strength, mobility, stability, and confidence needed to return to the mat. Rehabilitation is gradually progressed from basic movements to drilling and eventually more demanding grappling activities when appropriate.

Whether you are recovering from a recent injury, dealing with persistent pain, or returning after surgery, an individualized physical therapy program can help you safely work toward returning to BJJ, wrestling, and competition.
